　この夏、経法大生たちは8カ国・9大学で海外留学に行き、学修に励んでいます。
　今回は、現在、ロンドン大学SOASに留学している国際学部2年生 佐藤 美羽さんの留学の様子を、同大学出身の国際学部ミルズ准教授がリポートします。

 

London, a World City

 London, the capital of the U.K., is a city of about 9,000,000 people, which is a little larger than that of Osaka Prefecture. It is one of the world’s busiest and most exciting cities, welcoming visitors and workers from all corners of the globe. In fact, it may be one of the most truly cosmopolitan cities in the world.
 Students from our university study at SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies, which is part of the University of London. The school is situated in Bloomsbury, a tranquil area in the centre of London which also contains the British Museum.
 Bloomsbury, where SOAS is situated, is one of the most important cultural centres of London, enjoyed by students both from SOAS and other colleges of the University of London. There are a variety of cafes and eating places for the students’ leisure time. One of the best features is the grassy squares, filled with trees, including Russell Square which is just next to SOAS. Here, students can relax individually or together. For this reason, Bloomsbury has always been extremely popular with writers and artists.
 
　英国の首都ロンドンは、大阪府より少し大きい約900万人の都市で、世界中からの多くの人々が訪れます。佐藤さんは、ロンドン大学の東洋アフリカ研究学院（SOAS（ソアス）：The School of Oriental and African Studies）で学修に励んでいます。キャンパスは、大英博物館のあるロンドン中心部の静かなエリア、ブルームズベリーにあります。
　SOASのあるブルームズベリーは、ロンドンにおける文化の中心地の1つであり、SOASはじめとするロンドン大学の学生がキャンパスライフを楽しんでいます。そこには、学生が思い思いの時間を過ごすことができるカフェやレストランがあります。おすすめは、SOASのすぐ隣にあるラッセルスクエアのある芝生広場です。

 

The Foundation College Programme


 Our students study at the Foundation College of SOAS. Usually, they study on a short foundation course designed to familiarize the students with academic English. During this part of the course, students also study more specialized subjects, such as Media Studies, Development Studies, or Business Studies.
 After the foundation course, students pursue an even more specialized curriculum which allows them to develop their English skills, academic skills, and specialist knowledge.
 As well as lectures, students take part in lecture reviews, where they can focus on the lecture contents in more detail and deepen their knowledge of English and the subject concerned.
 The course also includes tutorials, where smaller numbers of students interact with a teacher from SOAS. Since Japanese students often find it difficult to ask questions in a large lecture, this provides a valuable opportunity for students to practise speaking and further develop their critical thinking skills.
 
　佐藤さんはSOASのファウンデーションカレッジで勉強しています。このコースでは、アカデミックな英語に慣れるためのクラスのほかに、メディア、技術開発、ビジネスなどの専門的な科目も学びます。ファウンデーションコース終了後、さらに専門的なカリキュラムに進み、英語力やアカデミックスキル、専門知識に磨きをかけます。
　このコースには、SOASの講師との対話によるチュートリアルも含まれています。大人数の講義で質問をするのはなかなか難しいですが、講師との対話で、授業内容の理解を深めて、批判的思考力をさらに伸ばす貴重な機会となります。

 

SOAS Now



 Although the pandemic affected the U.K. badly in 2020 and 2021, things are now almost as normal. Social life has almost returned to how it was before the pandemic, and all the lessons are on campus.
 Ms. Sato is enjoying the course, finding it both challenging and fulfilling. She lives in the SOAS dormitory, situated a short walk from the school, and has made many friends. While she has many lectures to prepare for and presentations to give, she is also taking time to visit other places on weekends. The U.K. is an extremely varied country, and it is recommended to visit areas outside London such as Brighton or Oxford in order to get a more complete image of the country.
 Although listening and speaking in so many lessons – 100 percent in English! – can be tiring, it is also extremely stimulating. By pushing oneself beyond what one had thought was possible, one can discover exciting new possibilities. The links of friendship forged with students from all parts of the world are also a valuable part of the overseas study experience.
 
　COVID-19によるパンデミックは、英国にも大きな影響を与えましたが、現在は以前の状態にほぼ戻り、すべての授業はキャンパス内で行われています。
　佐藤さんは、キャンパスから歩いてすぐのSOAS寮で、世界各国から来た友人と留学生活を送っています。授業の予習・復習やプレゼンテーションの準備などに追われていますが、週末には周辺地域に訪問したりしています。英国は非常に変化に富んだ国であり、より深く知るために、ブライトンやオックスフォードなどを訪れることをお勧めします。
　専門的な授業を英語で受講して大変ですが、非常に刺激的でもあります。それを乗り越えてさらなる高みを目指すことで、新たな可能性を見出すことができます。また、世界中から集まった留学生との友情と絆も、留学で得られる貴重なものとなるでしょう。
